Marta Wajdzik, born in 2001, is a Polish alto and soprano saxophonist and composer. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Composition and Arrangement at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice in 2023. In 2024, she started her Master’s degree in Jazz Performance at FHNW Musik-Akademie Basel. Marta has garnered acclaim for her contributions to both classical and jazz music.

 

Her achievements include:

  • Nomination for the FRYDERYK Award for Jazz Phonographic Debut of the Year (2021).
  • Winner of the Jazz Top poll by Jazz Forum, The European Jazz Magazine, as The Hope of the Year (2020 & 2021). 
  • Grand Prix at the 3rd Junior Młyn Jazz Festival Competitions (2019). 
  • First place in the solo instrumental category at the Blue Note Poznań Competition (2019). 
  • First place at the Tarnów Jazz Contest (2017). 
  • Honorable mention for best soloist at the National Jazz Band Contest in the Artistic Education Center in Warsaw (2017).
  • Best instrumentalist at the 20th Young Jazz And Blues Bands Competition in Gdynia (2017).

She is the winner of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage scholarship for students (2022) and the “Młoda Polska” scholarship (2023). Marta is also a Yamaha Artist. At the age of 18, Marta launched her debut electro-acoustic project, the Marta Wajdzik Quartet, collaborating with renowned Polish jazz musicians Paweł Tomaszewski, Robert Kubiszyn, and Paweł Dobrowolski. Their album, My Planet (2020), has been a significant success. With this ensemble, Marta has performed across Poland, Germany, Ukraine, and Israel, showcasing her work at prominent festivals including LOTOS Jazz Festival Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa, Jazz Nad Odrą, Sopot Jazz Festival, Jazz Juniors, Jazzonalia, Jazz w Centrum Spotkania Kultur w Lublinie, Ełk Jazz Night, Junior Młyn Jazz Festival, Enter Music Festival, Women In Jazz Festival (DE), Leopolis Jazz Fest (UA), Jazztage Gorlitz (DE), Polish Jazz in TLV (IL), Jazz Around Festival, and many more. She also appeared at the Blue House Jazz All Stars concert in Stockholm in February 2023, sharing the stage with notable artists such as Billy Kilson and Niels Lan Doky. In 2023/2024, Marta participated in the Focusyear program in Basel, Switzerland, collaborating with prominent figures like Lionel Loueke and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Currently, she is focused on creating original music with her new ensemble, the Marta Wajdzik Experiment, featuring top Polish musicians: Szymon Mika, Michał Jakubczak, Michał Aftyka and Dawid Fortuna.
